Work-life balance—it’s something we all talk about, but living it is a whole different challenge. For me, it’s easy to get caught up in the constant to-do lists, projects, and content creation. But if I’m not careful, I find myself working nonstop and forgetting to slow down and actually *live*. And honestly? That’s not the kind of life I want to build.
Why Balance Matters
I’ve learned that when I let work consume me, I end up missing the little moments that mean the most—like laughing with my husband after dinner, taking our dogs on an evening walk, or catching up with friends and family over coffee. Those are the things that fill my cup. Work might pay the bills, but it’s these moments that make life rich and meaningful.
When I prioritize time with the people (and pups!) I love it, I come back to my work refreshed and motivated. It’s not about neglecting responsibilities but remembering that life isn’t meant to be only about work.
How I Separate Work and Life
Here are a few things I try to practice:
1. Clock Out, Mentally and Physically
I set an end time for work, and once I close my laptop, I do my best not to look back. I know in certain positions this can be hard. I fell victim to constantly stressing over work and having my computer open. Now that I have implemented this in my life I even feel like I have more. Time of the day when I get home from my 9-5.
2. Protect My Personal Time
I put family and friend time on my calendar the same way I do work meetings. Whether it’s Sunday brunch with family or a quick dog park run, if it’s scheduled, I’m more likely to protect it.
3. Turn Off Notifications
My phone doesn’t need to buzz every time an email comes in. Shutting off work notifications after hours was the biggest game-changer! This really helps with leaving work at work.
4. Create Rituals That Shift My Mindset
Taking an evening walk after work with my husband, is one of my favorite ways to “switch off.” It gives me time to clear my head and transition from work mode to life mode. This is our time to catch up and talk about our day and plans for the weekend, while getting our blood flowing which is a bonus.
5. Don’t Lose Sight of Your Dreams
One of the biggest reasons I fight for balance is because I don’t want to lose sight of my bigger dreams. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in the daily grind that we forget what we’re working toward. For me, it’s about creating a life that feels full—one where I have time for my family, my passions, and the dreams that make me excited for the future.
Even small steps count. Maybe it’s setting aside time to write, traveling to a new place, or just carving out space to dream out loud with my husband. Those little choices add up and keep me aligned with the bigger picture.
Final Thoughts
Work will always be there. The emails, the projects, the deadlines—they’ll never stop. But our loved ones, our health, our joy? Those moments are fleeting. That’s why it’s so important to create balance. I don’t just want to build a career—I want to build a life. And that life is one where I’m present with my husband, snuggling my dogs, laughing with friends, and making memories with family.
Because in the end, work is just one piece of the puzzle. The rest—the love, the laughter, the dreams—that’s what makes it all worth it.
With Love,
Kait M.
