It all started one breezy Saturday morning, the kind of morning that makes you want to pour a big cup of coffee and open every door in the house. I stepped out onto our back porch, looked at the dull gray concrete, and thought, This could be so much more.
I wanted a place that felt like an extension of our home — morning coffee, lazy weekend hangs, cozy nights under string lights. The first step to making that vision real? Epoxying the porch floor. I’d seen those glossy, speckled floors all over Pinterest and figured, “How hard could it be?” (Spoiler: hard enough that my husband ended up stepping in to “supervise.”)
The Story (short version)
We prepped, mixed, and rolled. I sprinkled the decorative chips like confetti. My husband popped in to “check on me,” took the roller, and helped me finish. He handled the top coat like a pro. By nightfall, the porch felt like an entirely new room. Dogs approved.

- Epoxy floor kit (ours came with the base coat, decorative chips, and top coat)
- Floor cleaner/degreaser
- Painter’s tape (we barely used..)
- Paint rollers and an extension pole
- Mixing bucket and drill with a mixing attachment

- Patience (lots of it)
Step-by-Step: How We Epoxied Our Porch Floor
Step 1. Prep the Surface:
This is the most important step! We cleared off the porch completely — every chair, plant, and rug had to go. Then we cleaned the concrete like our lives depended on it. Every bit of dirt, dust, and leaf had to be gone or it would show through the epoxy.
Once it dried completely, I taped off the edges near the outside door and decided ehhh I don’t need to do the rest. LOL
Step 2. Mix and Roll:
Mixing epoxy in our kit was pretty easy as it was already in a bag and we had to shake well to make sure the mixture was combined. Once mixed, you have to move fast!
I started rolling the epoxy on, and it actually looked beautiful — smooth, glossy, and that perfect wet-concrete shine. But about 10 minutes in, my husband peeked out to “check on me”… and that quickly turned into him “supervising.” And by “supervising,” I mean he took over because apparently my roller technique was “too random.” 🙄 So while he rolled I finished the edges.
Step 3. Sprinkle the Chips:
This was my favorite part! You get to throw the decorative chips like confetti all over the floor. I may have gone a little overboard in some spots (oops). Once it was fully covered, we let it sit overnight to cure.
Step 4. Top Coat & Final Touches:
The next day, my husband applied the clear top coat for that perfect glossy finish — and I’ll admit, he did a great job. Once it dried, the floor looked amazing — sleek, durable, and totally transformed.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Once the hard part was done, it was time to bring everything back in. We added an outdoor rug, cleaned off the old furniture, and created my green wall for my workout area. I still have to convince my husband to hang the TV on the wall but it will do for now. And just like that suddenly, our porch didn’t just look finished — it felt alive.
At night, with the cool fall air drifting through, it became our new favorite hangout. We’ve had movie nights, dinners, and even slow mornings out there with coffee and the dogs curled up at our feet
