7 Must-Do Experiences in Ocala, Florida: My Home Away From Home

When people talk about Ocala, the first thing that usually comes up is horses. After all, this is the Horse Capital of the World. The rolling green pastures, white fences stretching for miles, and barns that look fancier than some people’s houses—it’s truly horse heaven.

But here’s my little twist: I didn’t grow up as a horse girl. Nope. I grew up a *cow* girl—literally—on my grandparents’ farm. While everyone else was riding horses, I was in the pasture helping with the cows. So even though Ocala has horses at every turn, I can’t help but see it all through my “cow lover” lens.

Why Ocala Feels Like Home ❤️

Between the horse country landscapes, my cow-loving heart, the downtown charm, the wineries, and that secret speakeasy—Ocala just wraps me up in a sense of comfort. It’s familiar yet fresh, a little bit country, a little bit chic, and completely my “home away from home.”

7 Fun & Fabulous Things to Do in Ocala, Florida 🌴🐎🍷

Ocala may be horse country at heart, but there’s so much more to explore in this charming slice of Florida. Whether you’re into nature, history, good food, or a cheeky cocktail, here are seven must-do experiences that make Ocala unforgettable:

1. Make a Splash at the Springs 💦

Ocala is blessed with some of the most beautiful springs in Florida, and each one has its own magic. At Silver Springs State Park, you can hop aboard a glass-bottom boat and glide over crystal-clear waters filled with fish, turtles, and even the occasional manatee. It’s also Hollywood-famous, once serving as the filming spot for Tarzan movies.

But don’t stop there—check out other nearby gems like Juniper Springs, with its dreamy swimming hole surrounded by lush forest, or Rainbow Springs, where you can float down the river in a kayak or tube while soaking up that Florida sunshine. Whether you want a peaceful dip, a family adventure, or a full-on lazy river vibe, Ocala’s springs deliver.

2. Wander Downtown Ocala ✨

Downtown is where Ocala’s charm really shines. With brick-lined streets, boutique shops, and cafés galore, it’s the perfect place for an afternoon stroll. Come for the twinkle lights in the town square, stay for the local eats, live music, and art murals that make every corner Instagram-worthy.

One of the crown jewels of downtown is the Marion Theatre, a beautifully restored 1940s cinema where you can catch a mix of classic films, new releases, and even special events. Stepping inside feels like time-traveling, with vintage vibes blended perfectly with modern flair.

And when hunger strikes? Downtown doesn’t disappoint. A few foodie favorites include:

  • Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grille – A local go-to for New Orleans–inspired dishes with plenty of Southern comfort.
  • Brick City Southern Kitchen & Whiskey Bar – BBQ lovers, this one’s for you. Ribs, brisket, and whiskey… need we say more?
  • La Cuisine – A French bistro with an elegant but cozy vibe, perfect for date night.
  • Big Hammock Brewery & Bites – For a more laid-back experience, grab a craft beer and some creative bar bites.

Whether you’re catching a movie at the Marion, sipping a cocktail, or indulging in comfort food, downtown Ocala has a way of mixing small-town charm with just the right amount of big-city fun.

3. Sip, Sip, Hooray: Wineries 🍇

Yes, Ocala has wineries—and they’re delightful. Sit under the shady oaks, enjoy a wine flight, and taste Florida-made wines that may surprise you. It feels like a little slice of Napa in horse country, but with a laid-back Southern charm. Pack a picnic, bring some friends, and toast to discovering one of Ocala’s best-kept secrets.

A few favorites to check out:

  • Katya Vineyards – A family-owned downtown gem with handcrafted wines and an upscale dining menu that pairs perfectly with every glass.
  • Island Grove Wine Company at Formosa Gardens – While technically just outside Ocala, this spot specializes in fruit wines (yes, blueberry wine is a thing, and yes, it’s delicious and quite frankly my #1).
  • Bluefield Estate Winery – A small, charming spot known for muscadine and blueberry wines, giving you a true taste of Florida.
  • Dakotah Vineyards & Winery – About 20 minutes from Ocala, this peaceful vineyard offers tastings and a little gift shop full of local goodies.

Each one has its own personality, so you can make a whole “wine trail” adventure out of it.

4. Hit the Trails at Ocala National Forest 🌲

Just outside the city lies the Ocala National Forest—an outdoor adventurer’s paradise. With springs that double as natural swimming pools, trails for hiking and horseback riding, and plenty of wildlife (hello, deer and black bears), it’s the perfect spot to unplug and recharge in nature.

5. Tour Horse Country 🐎

Even if you’re not a “horse person,” you can’t come to Ocala without tipping your hat to the horses. This is, after all, the Horse Capital of the World. Rolling green pastures and elegant farms stretch as far as the eye can see, and you can take a guided tour to get a behind-the-scenes look at how these incredible animals are raised and trained.

But the crown jewel of it all is the World Equestrian Center (WEC)—a jaw-dropping, world-class facility that feels more like a luxury resort than an equestrian complex. Whether you come for an event, to stroll the beautifully landscaped grounds, or just to grab a meal at one of the on-site restaurants (yes, they’re that good), it’s an experience in itself. From horse shows to holiday events to fine dining, WEC has become the spot that puts Ocala on the map in a big way.

6. The Hidden Speakeasy 🍸

Downtown has a secret, and it comes with velvet chairs and perfectly mixed cocktails. The hidden speakeasy feels like stepping back in time: low lighting, moody vibes, and drinks that make you want to savor every sip. Finding it is half the fun—but once inside, you’ll see why locals keep this gem on the down low. No access without the password, you can find it on their Facebook page!

7. Visit Local Farmers’ Markets & Festivals 🌻

From fresh produce to handmade crafts, Ocala’s markets and seasonal festivals showcase the heart of the community. Stroll through stalls of local honey, jams, and flowers, or catch live music while you snack on something homemade. It’s wholesome, feel-good fun with a small-town flair.

✨ Whether you’re floating on glass-bottom boats, sipping wine under the oaks, or whispering the password to a hidden speakeasy, Ocala proves time and again that it’s so much more than horse country—it’s a whole lifestyle.

Whenever I’m here, I feel like I’ve found the perfect middle ground: a place where my roots and my adventures happily meet.
