Discover Mount Dora: A Hidden Gem in Florida

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you just need to get away to a place that feels slower, sweeter, and a little magical. That’s exactly what I found in Mount Dora, Florida. This lakeside town is one of those spots that immediately makes you exhale a little deeper and wonder why you don’t visit more often. Can’t believe it took me 28 years to come see what this cute quaint town has to offer.

Where to Stay

Luckily for me its a short drive from Ocala Florida! However, there are a couple of places I’d choose if I were to stay in Mount Dora. If you want history and charm, the Lakeside Inn is the place. It’s this big, old hotel right on the water with a porch full of rocking chairs just begging you to sit down with a glass of wine and watch the boats go by.

But I’ll admit, I’m more partial to staying in one of the cute Airbnbs around town. Colorful cottages, quirky bungalows, even spots tucked just a block from downtown—it feels like living in your own little storybook home for the weekend.

Strolling by the Lighthouse

One of my favorite parts of the trip? Wandering down to the Mount Dora Lighthouse. It’s not huge, but it has such a unique charm (it’s actually the only inland freshwater lighthouse in Florida!). Perfect little spot to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with someone special. Great for a little photo op as well. 😜

Eating With a View

Food always finds me on trips like this, and Mount Dora didn’t disappoint. Restaurants overlooking the lake are everywhere, and there’s something so relaxing about having dinner while the sun sets over the water. It’s one of those moments where you slow down, sip your drink, and just soak it all in.

The Shops That Stole My Heart

OF COURSE, I had to make my way into the coffee scene. Serendipity Brews is the kind of spot you want to linger in—cozy, artsy, and they even have live music some nights. Then there’s Foxtail Coffee, which has this modern, fresh vibe and the kind of latte that makes you smile after the first sip. I’d honestly recommend doing both—coffee hopping is a thing, right?

Downtown Mount Dora is full of unique little shops, but the tea and spice shop really stood out to me. It smells amazing the second you walk in, and it’s so fun to browse all the different teas and blends. I left with a bag (or three) that I definitely didn’t need, but absolutely wanted.

Why Mount Dora Feels Special

What I loved most about Mount Dora is that it doesn’t try too hard—it just is. Charming, easygoing, and full of character. Between the historic inn, the sweet little lighthouse, the lake views, and the cozy spots to sip coffee, I left feeling refreshed and already planning my next visit.

Sometimes, the best trips aren’t the biggest adventures—they’re the quiet ones that remind you how good it feels to just slow down. Mount Dora is exactly that
